A look back at the inauguration, on Friday, April 11, of the new Place Béraudier at the Part-Dieu Station Multimodal Transit Hub in Lyon.
From design to completion, the ‘Place Béraudier’ project represents 10 years of dedication for the firm SUD Architectes.
It is a large-scale project, combining urban restructuring and architectural design, driven by the stimulating complexity of its multifaceted program. This ambitious project is part of one of the largest Multimodal Transit Hub (PEM) developments in France.
The new ‘Place Basse’ project stands out for its exceptionally rich program:
– A new entrance to Metro Line B
– The creation of France’s largest bike station with 1,500 spaces
– A new taxi stand
– Three levels of underground parking
– And new retail spaces
Access to this new ‘Place Basse’ is marked by a striking architectural feature. A true engineering marvel, this 1,000 m² circular metal canopy (38 meters in diameter) rests on nine slender, 15-meter-high pillars made of brushed stainless steel. It serves as a powerful symbol of the urban transformation of Part-Dieu, creating a seamless connection between the city, the train station, and various modes of transportation.
It embodies a spirit of openness and hospitality, and harmonizes transportation infrastructure with a high-quality public space. Its slightly curved underside, composed of 840 frosted hexagonal facets, reflects the activity between the square’s two levels, creating an atmosphere that is both dynamic and reassuring.
Its slender structure blends harmoniously into the surrounding urban landscape, ensuring visual continuity with the station’s facades. This metropolitan gateway has become a distinctive urban landmark, symbolizing the renewed identity of La Part-Dieu.
Next step: the bike station’s grand opening in June.
