In Lyon, the New Deal project involves the renovation of the Citroën garage, a building listed on the Inventory of Historic Monuments. Built in 1932, this exceptional structure – once considered the world’s largest gas station – is being converted into a mixed-use development combining offices, coworking spaces, educational facilities, and a showroom.
The architectural concept is based on an ambitious yet respectful approach to renovation, where the transformation serves as a catalyst for showcasing the building’s heritage. The original volumes are revealed and reinterpreted, restoring clarity and power to this iconic industrial architecture.
The main hall thus regains its original grandeur, reorganized to its full height, while the upper floors are adapted for contemporary commercial uses. The creation of patios brings natural light and enhances the quality of use within the heart of the building.
The building’s characteristic elements, such as the vehicle ramps on the façade or the large monumental door inspired by Jean Prouvé’s original design, are reinterpreted with finesse, contributing to the project’s strong identity.
The project thus combines industrial heritage with new uses, guided by principles of reversibility and sustainability. Certified BREEAM Excellent, the project embodies a rigorous environmental approach, positioning this rehabilitated heritage within the contemporary challenges of the productive city.
