SUD architectes is pleased to share images of the winning design for the future casino in Lion-d’Angers.
Developed for the COGIT Group, in collaboration with Atelier d’Architecture Rivat, this project marks an important milestone in the town’s development. It goes beyond the sole function of a casino to offer a hybrid space, combining dining, entertainment, and coworking within a 3,800 m² facility.
The project serves as the gateway to the city and anticipates the neighborhood’s future development. Its layout preserves a landscaped area that enhances an existing wetland. It aims to meet the Passivhaus environmental standard, relying on bio-based construction, integrated water management, and particular attention to biodiversity, embodying an architecture that is contextual, sustainable, and iconic.
The architectural concept is guided by a dual ambition: regional roots and contemporary expression. Inspired by the Angers landscape and its large equestrian facilities, it offers a reinterpretation through simple volumes and a restrained, recognizable design language.
The building is organized across two above-ground levels: a stone base housing the more enclosed spaces, and a tall, largely glazed volume. This composition is framed by two strong horizontal lines that extend the design and direct the gaze toward the wider landscape.
The upper line is formed by an overhanging roof that creates a continuous canopy, sheltering the surrounding terraces. Its underside, in mirror-polished stainless steel, reflects the activity and changing scenery of the site.
These two horizontal lines are held in tension by slanted columns. This structural device gives the whole the character of a feat of engineering and asserts an architecture that frames and reveals the landscape.
