LA PART-DIEU SHOPPING & LEISURE CENTRE Lyon (France) - 2022
General presentation
Contexte & enjeux
The successful urban integration of the Part-Dieu shopping centre is reflected in its permeability. The concept developed in collaboration with the MVRDV agency responded to this problem. The existing façade and its motif, designed in the 1970s by our colleague ZELLER, is maintained and enhanced and reinterpreted on the extension.
This creates a uniform envelope that encompasses this commercial complex. At the entrances, an “evaporation” of the prefabricated concrete façade highlights the centre’s accesses and makes the urban permeability felt. It is now possible to cross the centre on foot, creating a real pedestrian link from Lyon Part-Dieu station to the city centre.
Catching your breath on the roofs of the hyper-urban. The Part-Dieu project also offers the public direct access to the roof terrace via monumental staircases. Contrary to the initial project where the car had a main place and occupied these surfaces, the extension and renovation put an end to this 1970s logic. A traffic study showed that the number of parking spaces can be significantly reduced by shifting the focus to so-called soft modes of transport.
Thus, it was possible to minimise parking on the roof to create a planted forecourt. Vegetated embankments and tree pits are planted to develop a real hanging garden. A range of restaurants with terraces overlooking these spaces enhances the value of this new urban meeting place in the middle of Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement and France’s 2nd largest business district. Just a stone’s throw from Lyon’s main train station, visitors can find a mix of shopping and leisure activities with a multiplex cinema and sports attractions.
