CINÉMA PATHÉ VAISE

In Lyon’s Vaise district, the Pathé Cinema project is part of the conversion of former industrial wine cellars into a contemporary leisure facility. The renovation highlights the heritage character of the existing building by preserving and showcasing its volume and structural framework, which are key elements defining the site’s identity.

The project transforms the main interior space into a unifying public area, bringing together the lobby and the various cinema-related activities. This large nave becomes a lively hub, where the existing structure is left exposed and serves as the foundation for a new spatial experience.

The interior architectural treatment plays on a deliberate contrast between the existing, sober, and mineral elements and more colorful contemporary interventions, which signal the various functions. These elements introduce a playful and dynamic interpretation of the space.

The project’s programmatic density leads to the addition of new volumes adjacent to the wine cellars, notably a multi-level parking garage on the railroad side, which complements the complex without altering the perception of the historic building. This layout allows for the structuring of traffic flows while preserving the integrity of the heritage.

The complex offers a respectful transformation, where industrial heritage is highlighted through contemporary use, striking a balance between conservation, programmatic intensity, and a new urban center.
