UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF CAEN NORMANDIE CAR PARK Caen (France) - 2024

General presentation

Contexte & enjeux

The in-depth transformation of the Caen Normandy University Hospital site will lead to major changes in the way the hospital operates. The densification of the land requires the creation of 850 parking spaces to the north of the future hospital.
The choice was made to propose a structure with the smallest possible footprint in order to free up land for the benefit of green spaces, mainly to the west and east. The design of this silo car park stems from a desire to limit the perception of a large built-up area to the south and to enhance the architecture of the structure by following the view cones from the existing visual openings. The architecture echoes the project of the new hospital currently under construction. This proposal has the merit of not departing from the generous provision of natural light in the car park and respect for natural ventilation, which imposes a porosity in the façade.
In order to attenuate the effect of the mass of a structure, it seemed essential to us to treat the roof as a fifth façade. The roof will be overhung by photovoltaic shades set back from the main facades, this arrangement having the effect of limiting the perceived height of the structure. Thus, by the nature of its structure and the treatment of its facades, the structure is a neat object that tends to disappear into its environment.
